This was such a good movie. It's about a guy who kills himself after a break-up. When he dies, he goes to the afterlife populated by others who have committed suicide and is like the place of the living, except worse. He learns that his ex-girlfriend offed herself a month after him and he then embarks on a roadtrip with his Russian friend to find her. On the way, they pick-up and befriend ahitchhiker who insists she is there by mistake. Together they set out to find what they're looking for and yadda yadda yadda.

We went to the golf course on base for lunch yesterday. As I was waiting for my lasagna, Akebono walks in! Of course I was too shy to talk to him, but I did get my share of staring in. He's lost weight since he retired from sumo, but he's still quite large. He was with two other very large people. I would've taken a stalker picture, but I forgot my camera!!!

In other celebrity news, Smashmouth is coming at the end of the month. I'm not a fan, but I like seeing famous people so I'll check out the show.

I got four shots today:
1) TB
2) MMR Vaccine
3) Flu
4) HPV Vaccine (Apparently, this is highly recommended for females, so my doctor basically forced it on me. I survived unscathed, but when my friend got this shot a few years ago, they hit a nerve and she was forced to endure four months of rehabilitation on her arm.)

I've always loved getting shots. Especially several in the same day. They make me feel tough, so I was especially pleased today. I also love getting them for free. God bless the military and my dad's retiree ID!

I also love hearing tests because I feel it's my best asset. The nurse today told me that I have excellent hearing, above average. Awesome! Unfortunately, my eyesight has deteriorated from 20/10 to 20/20. I swear it's the new technology though. They only test you on four letters at a distance of their choice.

I just bought this! Mostly because the bottle was so pretty... Anyway, I have trouble finding perfume that lasts long on my skin. This one has super staying power. I sprayed it on my wrists in the morning before school and I can still smell the vanilla on it now, 12 hours later! I'm not good at describing perfumes, but this one is initially a sweet spice and after a couple minutes it's like a vanilla with a little spice. Haha. I don't know. I can't quite figure it out. Anyway, it smells nice, though I don't usually like sweet scents. And I wonder if it's too sweet for Hawaii weather...

But the bottle is so pretty!

Yoga

In an attempt to strengthen my back, I've been trying to do yoga every night for at least 15 minutes. I know it doesn't sound like much, but I think it's helping! But it might just be my mind... :P If I do certain sequences of poses, I can raise my heart rate quite a lot in just a few minutes!

Anyway, I've been getting a lot of pose sequences from my Nintendo DS. I love my DS so much! There is nothing that it can't do, except maybe do thermodynamics, but that's okay. I forgive him. My DS even has poses for different things to improve the mind, energy, and beauty! My favorite is "Beautiful Posture."

Also, I'm going to try to take ballet again next semester, if my schedule permits. When I took it a year or two ago, I felt like my back improved so much, due to the pilates and other things we were doing. Also, my knees were in tip-top shape! When I stopped, my back regressed. :( But no more~!!!

Anyway, I recommend that you all try yoga on the DS!

I had been using my Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-S90 for nearly four years. It took decent pictures, but the shutter lag was ridiculous. I realized long ago that it was time for an upgrade, but as soon as you buy a camera, they come out with something better.

However, the other day I quite impulsively purchased the Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-W170. At 10.1 megapixels, the 15MB of built in memory got me no where so I bought a 4GB memory stick, which did wonders. With my new camera in tow, I feel the need to capture every moment of my boring life.

Unfortunately, I'm already considering a new(er) camera. One with intense shutter speed. I want to take moving objects minus the annoying blur!!!

I'm back from Kyoto (Japan's capital and the emperor's official residence from 794-1868). The original inhabitants were immigrants from Korea! 90 degree plus weather and intense humidity made the journey a bit intense. Surprisingly the eight hour bus ride wasn't nearly as bad as I imagined. Plus it was a zillion times cheaper than the bullet train. There are a few more cities I need to conquer in Japan but I doubt I'll get to those this summer.

Next stop is Hiratsuka, which is famous for its Tanabata Festival. Thankfully it's only an hour away. The original tale comes from China and is also recognized in Korea (칠석). It celebrates the story of two celestial beings (the stars Altair and Vega) who were so in love that they neglected their duties so the emperor separated them to opposite sides of the Milky Way and let them meet only once a year (the seventh day of the seventh month).

I'd hoped the language might come on its own, the way it comes to babies, but people don't talk to foreigners the way they talk to babies. They don't hypnotize you with bright objects and repeat the same words over and over, handing out little treats when you finally say "potty" or "wawa." It got to the point where I'd see a baby in the bakery or grocery store and instinctively ball up my fists, jealous over how easy he had it. I wanted to lie in a French crib and start from scratch, learning the language from the ground floor up. I wanted to be a baby, but instead, I was an adult who talked like one, a spooky man-child demanding more than his fair share of attention.

Hahaha. I love David Sedaris. I think all of us can relate to this. At least I feel the same way, sorta.

These past couple of years, me and my huge extended family go out for lunch for mother's day. This year we went to a buffet at Willows. It's right by UH, oddly. Anyway, it was gooooood!

I have no studying skills. I have a Korean exam tomorrow and my idea of studying is sleeping and playing video games, apparently. I'm kidding.

I put on some Korean music, which I'm convinced helps me somehow in Korean vocabulary acquisition, lol! It's all via the subconscious! But other than that, I think the other things I've been trying to do are kinda worthless. I just finished making flashcards. It's 2:40 am. Why was I making flashcards in the first place? I'm ready to go to sleep. I'm not going to review them now. My idea of studying (for Korean) is putting post its in my book where there is ~*important*~ narration. Not reading the narration, but marking where it is, lol. And I took the time to highlight vocabulary words on my handouts that I think would be on the test. Again, WHY?

Anyway, my study skills for my other classes are, unfortunately, worse. Sometimes I don't even study. My excuse is that if I get good sleep, it's way better than if I'm a zombie. And this can all be traced back to the fact that I wait until the last minute to do things. LOL

Anyway, having no sleep before a Korean exam might be helpful to me, sorta like being drunk. Only then I won't actually care if I sound dumb, and perhaps I might stumble upon something that is actually right or useful.

Or maybe I just don't give a damn.

JabbaWockeez KILLED it in the 6th episode. But Kaba Modern's Grease performance was still really good! I don't know. I'm so confused. Hahaha.
BUT! Poor Kaba Modern. They were in the bottom two, but BreakSk8 was eliminated (FINALLY!). I thought Kaba did well last week with their "Thriller" performance.
Anyway, I'm guessing that it'll be JabbaWockeez and Kaba Modern in the top two. Status Quo is very acrobatic, but it's barely dancing. Sorryyyyyyy.

And Yuri crying because she made a tiny mistake... :( :( :( So sad! But Lil Mama is right! At least she went straight back into it as if nothing happened. That's awesome. Go, Yuri!

And now that I'm thinking about it... I wonder if most of JabbaWockees' fame is just due to the masks. It's very gimmicky. LOL. But at the same time, it's fucking awesome. Waiting for my fluid mechanics class to start, I was sitting with a couple of my classmates. I had bought a spam musubi because a familiar cat came back and he looked hungry (note: cats like spam, but not rice!). I was feeding the cat and someone said, "Isn't it funny how UH has a billion stray cats?" We talked a little about it, and somehow the conversation went to stray dogs:
"Have you ever noticed that there are no stray dogs in Hawaii?"
"I guess that's true..."
"Like, say, in Kalihi... or Waipahu..."
I said, "That's a horrible stereotype!"

These look better than any school lunch I've had. I wonder how much they cost. When I lived in Hilo, middle school lunches were only 75 cents. At the base schools in Japan they're $2.10, but the food is worse and the portions are smaller. Students need good food that's affordable to keep their brains charged.

Speed of Sound = Mach 1 = 761 mph (at sea level)

When an airplane travels through air, it creates sound waves. If the airplane is moving slower than the speed of sound, the sound waves are able to travel ahead of the plane. However, by increasing the plane's speed to supersonic (faster than the speed of sound), the waves of sound emitted by the plane cannot precede the plane, and so they compress and accumulate into a shockwave that travels at the speed of sound. When this shockwave passes, a listener hears all at once the sound emitted over a longer period, which is a SONIC BOOM!

When a plane accelerates to just break the sound barrier, a cloud might form, as seen in the above picture.

The Air Force has conducted faster-than-sound test flights since 1947, and today most Air Force fighter aircraft are capable of supersonic speed.

FUN FACT: As a space shuttle re-enters the earth's atmosphere, speeds can reach up to nearly Mach 25!!!

Honey Lemon Tea

I got sick. I'm talking major constant headache, a fever, and body aches (though that might be because of yoga...). I thought I was gonna die. So no more sleepness nights and solder fumes for me!

Anyway, when I'm sick, I love it when my mom makes me honey lemon tea. It's simple: honey + lemon juice + hot water = MAMA'S LOVE THAT WILL HEAL ANYTHING! It's so yummy.

And it's wayyy better than the horrid ginger tea. Hahaha. ICK. I think my saving grace this time was that we don't have ginger on hand right now. And perhaps my mom feels bad for me and doesn't want to make me suffer more than I have to..... Though I admit ginger is really good for you, I can't stand the taste of straight ginger!

Luminous Arc

I've been playing Luminous Arc lately. It's a tactical rpg. The story is pretty hilarious, to me. It's sort of a church vs witches thing. I guess the thing that I find funny about it is that they're always saying, "Protect the light! Condemn the dark!" Hahaha. Okay. Anyway, the gameplay is alright. I think the reason why I like it is that it reminds me of one of my most favorite games EVER: Disgaea (playstation 2).

Disgaea is another turn-based tactical rpg. It was all sorts of awesome. In fact.. I think if they adapted this game for the ds, it'd sell really well. I liked the gameplay better than Luminous Arc. You can select a move, and then move so that you can hit your target.. Rather than moving, then finding out you didn't move far enough. Cause then you have to go back like 4 times in the menu and... it's just way too much work! ANYWAY, it's about a demon who wakes up after 2 years to finds that his dad (the king of the netherworld) has died. So, he sets out to reclaim the throne as the undisputed overlord. Something like that.

I'm obviously really bad at telling stories. Hahaha.

Alcohol History - Soju (Korea)

Soju is a distilled beverage typically made from rice. Jinro is its largest manufacturer. It's also the first alcohol I tried outside the home. We were poor and it was cheap. We mixed it with coke, which was also cheap. Needless to say, it was disgusting.

The most popular variety of soju is Chamisul, which Koreans drink like water. I'm not kidding. (1 bottle = 7 shots)

Oh, Newton-Raphson Method! How simple you are. Yet how deceptive. If a function has multiple roots, you are beyond lame. Would you ever converge? But that's not the problem. Perhaps I wasn't thinking straight. The loss of blood going to my brain throughout the test had me making stupid decisions. Why didn't I thiiiink of the modified Newton-Raphson method? Whhhhhy? I know it! I KNOW IT. As soon as I saw the words, "undetermined amount of multiple roots around x=-1," I thought, "DURRRR NEWTON-RAPHSON METHOD FOR MULTIPLE ROOTS? HYUK HYUK!" But knowing my teacher, he's going to rip my test apart. And he's going to looooove it.

Black Day

In Korea, Valentine's Day is for girls to give gifts (chocolate) to guys. Then on White Day (March 14th), guys return the favor and give gifts to girls.

And then there's Black Day, for those that didn't receive anything on either Valentine's or White day. The idea is that the single people get together and eat 짜장면 (jjajangmyun) together to celebrate their singleness (or sulk.., whatever!). 짜장면 is chinese noodles with black bean sauce, hence the name 'Black' Day. How clever.

Anyway, you can bet that you'll find me eating 짜장면 on April 14th! LOL

First of all, I expected these to be filled with glorious ice cream. Instead, I was confronted with whip cream the consistency of marshmallow fluff and a layer of bean paste surrounded by a layer of mochi in the same flavor. The paste was too intensely flavored, making the whole thing painfully sweet.
